Standing room only

There are differing views on the best place to stand on the train for the rush hour commute. Several spots could be arguably more comfortable than others, but I will argue that there is indeed a BEST spot.

The edge under the doorway - This is probably the worst place to stand. There are people on all sides of you forcing you to reach up and grab on to the emergency door release handle or get uncomfortably close with someone and try to reach for the side. You also have to deal with people moving on and off at each stop.

The middle of the door area - Again, this is another terrible place to stand. There are people on all sides and you are forced to be uncomfortable close with them to hold on. You have to move so people can enter and exit at each stop.

Leaning against the wall by the door - People seem to think this is the best spot. They will fight for these spots and hold on to them as much as possible. Once people get this spot they feel justified spreading out and taking as much space as possible. They also may read and stick their book in your face. Additionally, they are exempt from moving to let people off. Face it, this spot kind of sucks. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

Ends of the car - Usually smells like pee. NOT WORTH IT.

The middle of the car - This is it! The ideal spot. You don't have to move to let people on and off. You can get a comfortable balance and stand holding onto a seat back. There is plenty of space to hold out a book or magazine and read. People don't know this is the best spot so it is usually open. You may have to push through a group of people crowded in the undesirable spots to get here.
